Keep us safe for one Starbucks a month: no heartworms.

Bur-dee here. Hope everyone had a wonderful howliday season. I have been a busy Burd but I have something on my mind. Hearts everywhere for Valentine's day got me thinking about mosquitoes and heartworms.

I know the weather is whack lately, and mosquitoes are the last things on peoples' minds but we need to talk. Here in Texas it rarely gets cold enough to kill them; one warmish day and they are swarming. For dogs, they are death from above because they carry the dreaded heartworms.

Heartworms are sure not as friendly as they sound. They get into our blood through mosquito bites and live in our bodies. They lodge in our hearts and grow. And grow. And grow. And kill us. Here are some pictures from a 5 year old dog. I am not sure of his fate but from these pictures he is probably at the Rainbow Bridge.  :-(

If it is not too late they can be killed by a very expensive medicine that is harsh on us; many do not survive treatment. If we do, we have to be locked in a crate for 4-8 WEEKS to make sure dead worms don't cause strokes.

Luckily, for around the price of one measly Starbucks a month, there is medicine that keeps those ugly worms from growing. Heartgard is inexpensive and has kept me healthy for 2.5 years and will keep me healthy the rest of my life. I don't want those nasty worms. Make it easy, pick a day that is easy to remember like the 1st or 15th and give us heartworm preventative every month. Don't forget and keep us safe and happy. We will love you forever for that.
