Pet sitting, kennel, is there a difference? You betcha!

Your social director is here with a very good question. We have been asked what the difference between us and a kennel is.

Pet sitting is defined as “the act of caring for a pet in its own home while the owner is away.” Kamp Ham offers this service but some pets have special health issues or severe separation anxiety and need a pet sitter who sits them in our home. Some owners would rather not give anyone access to their homes which makes Kamp Ham more appealing.

Our lovely city defines a kennel as a facility of more than five animals that are over a certain age, are not pets of the owner and have outside runs. Thus the average boarding facilities are kennels: large numbers of animals, outdoor runs, none are pets of the owner. These kennel places must be licensed and inspected to ensure your pets' health is not at risk and to ensure that the outdoor runs are not a nuisance to the neighbors.

While a pet sitter does not fall under these licensing guidelines, Kamp Ham maintains sanitary procedures to keep our campers healthy--us show dogs need to be in tip top shape, after all. Suffice it to say we go through a lot of pet friendly cleaners and laundry soap. Kamp Ham does not have outside runs. We also do not sit large numbers on site, which is why we recommend booking early as space is very limited.

Now I have been told of a few less enlightened types, clearly not well versed in the rules, who call us an unlicensed kennel. This give The Burd the sads, and I have a question for them. Does a baby sitter need a day care license? That is just silly....a baby sitter doesn't need one because he or she is not a day care center. Same with a pet sitter: sitting can be in our home or yours, but does not require a license by the city's own rules as they do not fall under the definition of a kennel.

Want to know more? You can read the rules of the road in their entirety right here. We also encourage you to schedule a visit with us and see for yourself how we work and how well your kamper will be cared for.

XOXO,
Bur-dee

Thank you so much for educating us about this. I didn't know this service exists I was always worried about leaving my fur babies in another home because I am worried they can get infection from other dogs. I will be very interested to avail this service next time I leave the country. I am sure it will be less stressful for me and for my babies.
